Over-dyed and vintage rugs are reclaimed and rejuvenated good quality Oriental rugs that might otherwise be thrown away. Unloved rug patterns or overly faded Oriental rugs are recreated as desirable "new" rugs with single color over-dyes, while vintage rugs are sourced by our team, washed and carefully examined to see if minor repairs to fringes or edge bindings are necessary to make them "as good as new".
Vintage rugs always retain their original patterns and colors (although colors can and do fade over time), but over-dyed rugs can look completely contemporary. Rather than mimic the multiple colors of vintage rugs, over-dyeing focuses on a single color to create a new uniform color with a vintage-contemporary look. Sometimes described as "distressed", over-dyeing creates a whole new class of rugs with cross-over versatility for a variety of home decor.
Over-dyed and vintage rugs celebrate the philosophy behind the make do and mend movement that seeks to repurpose objects and not throw them out. Our over-dyeing process neutralizes the original colors and pattern before a new dye is applied. The vintage look is enhanced by drying the rugs in the sun to aid sun bleaching. Colors range from saturated and bright to soft "tea-stained" looks. Multi-tonal looks are possible, while the inherent features of the rug help create a nuanced look.
